Newport’s Kindergarten class led the procession

Newport students celebrated Down Syndrome Awareness this year! It was a great opportunity to recognize and embrace some differences among our young students. In addition to learning in the classroom, students also took to the street, walking around the block to raise awareness about Down Syndrome.

It was a beautiful day for a walk! Infants strolled in decorated strollers, bedecked with balloons. Students rocked crazy socks and dressed in blue and yellow, the official colors of down syndrome awareness. Some classrooms even made signs and banners for the occasion. Parents were invited to stand along the parade route in support of their students.

A preschool classroom made colorful paddles to raise awareness for Down Syndrome.

World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated worldwide on March 21st, or 3/21 in recognition of trisomy 21, a condition caused by triplication of the 21st chromosome.
